Jennifer Harrison PhotoAS A SUCCESSFUL CAREER TRANSITIONER, I OFFER MY CLIENTS UNIQUE INSIGHTS AND PERSPECTIVES TO HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS.

I had been in the insurance industry for over 30 years and was working for the top global professional services organization. I had the opportunity to travel all over the world and work with incredibly smart and talented people. I developed my internal and external profile and was comfortable consulting with C-Suite execs from the largest global insurance firms. I was well-paid and always performed above expectations. My role was unique and nuanced which differentiated me from any other colleague. I always worked remotely and enjoyed having complete autonomy.

So why would I give that up?

There was no challenge for me, and my work became mundane and lacked purpose. I was in the same role, doing the same thing, having the same conversations for years and there was no growth trajectory, so my prospects were dim. I started to feel uninspired, undervalued, underwhelmed, and stuck. This went on for years.

I found that the best part of my job was mentoring and coaching future leaders within the organization, which was a very small part of what I did from day to day. I tried to make it a bigger part of my job description to no avail. As I learned more about the impact of coaching and how rewarding it was to partner with clients to achieve their goals, I eventually pursued my ICF ACC credential in my free time. I knew then that was how I would reinvent myself and do it on my terms.

What took me so long?

It’s scary to leave the only industry I ever really knew. It’s even scarier to think of the financial impact of my resignation on my husband and our family. Not only was I changing my career, but I was also launching my own business to do it. I felt selfish, foolish, unprepared, immobilized with fear, and totally nuts. There was a lot to consider and work through to convince myself I was doing the right thing in the long run.

But I did it anyway.

There are a few reasons why I was able to transition my career. Most notable was the enormous support from my husband and children who are my biggest cheerleaders. But equally impactful was the coaching I received from my peers during the years that led up to this major career pivot. I saw the value first-hand of reframing my thinking to build my confidence. I set goals and overcame obstacles that I wouldn’t have been able to see my way out of on my own. And I knew that I could bring this same value to others.

Now I’m doing what I love. I get the chance to make a difference for my clients and that is my greatest reward.
